Over the course of the school year, we have had several unique and interesting assignments. Some of them took me outside my comfort zone, but in the end, I learned a great deal from all of them.

Our first assignment involved us doing a sort of food review. My neighborhood is mainly Italian, and there are many Italian restaurants scattered around it. While I could have easily picked any one of these Italian restaurants, I decided that I wanted something different. But where to choose? I was lost for a choice until the day of my Tae Kwon Do black belt test. After we finished up, we went for a celebratory lunch at this restaurant Chengu Du, Taste of Szechuan. I hadn’t been there for a while, and so I thought it would be the prefect location to use! I tried several things I normally wouldn’t, and thus the review was born!

Our second assignment involved researching a particular dish. There were only about a million options that I could choose from, so once again I was at a loss as to what dish I should pick. That all changed one night after the family and I went out to eat after shopping. We stopped at a local Italian restaurant. As I perused the menu, something that I hadn’t seen before caught my eye: Polenta. Not that I could remember it, but I asked my mother about it and she said I used to eat it all the time when I was young. Intrigued, I ordered the dish, took one bite, and I was immediately hooked. And so, the topic for my 2nd assignment was ready to go!

Assignment 3 was a bit different from the last 2, as we had to find 8 different sources on a topic of our choice. This one was a fairly standard one, as I had done assignments like this many times in the past. While I was able to learn about my topic and find many unique and interesting sources, it was again a fairly standard affair. Not that I didn’t enjoy it, but it seemed to be a bit lackluster after the last 2 assignments that we had.

Assignment number 4 hit especially close to home, as we had to interview someone about their culture and cuisine. Naturally, the only person I could even fathom interviewing was my mother, one of the best cooks I have ever met. But while she was the one being interview, in reality it was my grandmother as the main focus, who had passed away a few years ago. She left behind quite the amazing legacy, and we have tried to keep her alive through our memories and actions. Every time we cook, it is a tribute to her, a way of showing our thanks and appreciation for all the hard work she did in the past to feed our family. It is a responsibility that I do not take lightly, nor is it one that I ever intend to forget about.

And thus, we have reached our final assignment, our reflection piece, for the end of the year. It had been a wild ride, one that I have enjoyed every step of the way. I’m glad I took this class, as it has really broadened my horizons. I don’t think I’ll quite be able to look at food the same again. And I don’t think that I really should. Food is, after all, much greater than it initially appears. It is the sum of all the people behind it, a living history.
Thank you all for taking this journey with me. See you next time!
